About City

London, the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom, boasts a population of nearly 9 million residents. Nestled along the River Thames in south-east England, it marks the starting point of a 50-mile estuary stretching to the North Sea. London's rich history spans over two millennia, originating as the Roman settlement of Londinium, which evolved into the bustling financial hub known as the City of London, retaining its medieval boundaries. Across the Thames lies the City of Westminster, a historic seat of national governance and parliament for centuries. Over time, the term "London" has come to encompass the expansive metropolis surrounding these central districts, historically spanning Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent, and Hertfordshire, now predominantly forming Greater London, overseen by the Greater London Authority since the 19th century.
London, a prominent global hub, exerts significant influence across a multitude of sectors including arts, entertainment, fashion, commerce and finance, education, healthcare, media, science and technology, tourism, as well as transport and communications. With a GDP of €801.66 billion in 2017, it stands as Europe's largest urban economy and holds a pivotal position as one of the world's major financial centers. Boasting Europe's highest concentration of higher education institutions, London is home to globally esteemed academic establishments such as Imperial College London for natural and applied sciences, the London School of Economics for social sciences, and the comprehensive University College London.
Renowned for its cultural vibrancy, London attracts visitors from around the globe, making it the most visited city in Europe. Its transportation infrastructure, including the world's busiest city airport system and the oldest rapid transit system, the London Underground, facilitates seamless connectivity within the city and beyond.
Reflecting its diverse population, London embraces over 300 languages, contributing to its rich tapestry of cultures. With a mid-2018 population of approximately 9 million, Greater London ranks as Europe's third-most populous city, exerting considerable demographic influence within the United Kingdom and England. The Greater London Built-up Area, with around 9.8 million inhabitants as of the 2011 census, stands as Europe's fourth-most populous region. Furthermore, the broader London metropolitan area, housing about 14 million residents in 2016, attests to its status as a megacity.
London's historical and architectural treasures include four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London, Kew Gardens, the combined Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret's Church, and the historic settlement in Greenwich. Iconic landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and Trafalgar Square further enrich its landscape. Cultural enthusiasts can explore a plethora of museums, galleries, libraries, and theaters, including the British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern, British Library, and numerous West End theatres.
The city also hosts prestigious sporting events such as the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, Wimbledon Tennis Championships, and the London Marathon. Notably, London made history in 2012 as the first city to host three Summer Olympic Games, cementing its place as a global sporting destination.
